The work of couture designer Guo Pei in currently on display at the Auckland Art Gallery and is being seen by New Zealand audiences for the first time.
Titled ‘Guo Pei, Fashion, Art, Fantasy’ the international exhibition opened on December 9 and will run to May 5. It highlights the Chinese based designer’s most innovative and captivating pieces created between 2005 and 2020.
Through her use of exquisite fabrics, ancient embroideries and sculptural craftsmanship, the artisan has created a collection of stunning garments that draw inspiration from the history and culture of China, historic interiors, tradition and various dream and mystical states.
“This exhibition celebrates one of the world’s most renowned couturiers. Guo Pei’s extravagant ensembles are works of art, incorporating extraordinary fabrics and exquisite embroidery, and capturing influences from across the world,” Director of Auckland Art Gallery, Kirsten Lucy said.
“Each piece has been created with intricate skill and precision, representing thousands of hours of dedication and remarkable artistry.”
A series of events are being staged by the gallery to align with the exhibition. They include: Guo Pei After Hours, Fashion Fantasy Ball, an embroidery workshop called Stitch and Sip and Guo Pei Fashion and Inspiration lectures.
In 2015 singer Rhiannon drew rave reviews when she wore a resplendent yellow gown to the Met Gala in New York that was designed by Guo Pei. The dramatic handmade dress accented by floral scrolls and fur trim took two years to make. A scroll headpiece complimented the couture garment.
